The 2015 Annual Membership meeting of Red Devon USA was called to order by President Roy Doan. The first order of business was thanking Bill and Nancy Walker for hosting this year’s event and for all the work that they and the Walker Century Farm team had done to prepare for such a large event.

Our Administrative Secretary, Sarah Wilkerson, was introduced and was presented with a flower arrangement in appreciation for her important work.  Our retiring board members, Jacob Owens, Charlie Trantham and Gerald Fry were introduced (Mr. Fry was unable to attend because of health issues).  All members of Red Devon USA are appreciative of the years of service each has given on behalf of the Red Devon breed.

Regina Tesnow was recognized for her work in ordering and delivering the t-shirts and sweatshirts for this year’s conference.  The Youth Judging Contest Committee was introduced and included Nelda Gerner, Laura Watson and Steve Rockcastle.  Aaron von Frank and Susan Sebotnick were recognized for their work with the RDUSA website.

Some announcements were then made including an invitation for anyone who might be interested in hosting the conference next year or anytime in the future to contact a board member.  There was also an invitation for anyone who wanted to volunteer for committee work or other jobs to again contact a board member.

The other board members were introduced and presented their committee reports.

The Committee Reports

Paul Colucci, RDUSA Treasurer, gave his financial report.  The checking and savings accounts carry a balance of $74,771.79 and Red Devon USA has total assets of $80,429.79.

With the conference in full swing there was little for Jacob Owens to report on from the Events Committee.  He thanked all the people who worked with him on this year’s conference.

Jeremy Engh reported on the Registration/DNA committee and there was a small discussion on CLRC.  The consensus is that we will continue to monitor CLRC’s progress.  Jeremy gave a very brief report on the show and sale and introduced the judges, Vic Edwards and Alison Heap who traveled here from Australia.  Vic spoke about the enjoyable experience he and Alison have had.

The Chairperson of the Promotions Committee, Greg Hickl, reported on some changes he was recommending concerning advertising in trade publications.  He is recommending publications that offer smaller ad rates but have much larger circulations.

Guille Yearwood, editor of DEVON USA, presented his report and thanked everyone who contributes to the magazine and Linda Marquardt, who helps with editing.  He also expressed concern over delayed mailings of the magazine by the post office.

Information on the website and some analytics about the traffic the website is generating was presented by Roy Doan.

The Election

Charlie Trantham, chairperson of the Nominations/Election committee, informed the members about the voting process.  Roy Doan explained the changes in the voting process and why they were needed to comply with the by-laws.  There were no nominations from the floor.  The members elected Roy Doan, Ann DeRousie, Jeff Moore and Doug Bentrem.  Doug and Ann have never served on the board before and it is good to have new faces with fresh ideas.

Mr. Preston Carlton

A highlight of the meeting was the presentation of the Dr. Stewart Fowler Achievement Award to Mr. Preston Carlton. Mr. Carlton was honored for his many years of dedicated work promoting the Red Devon breed.  He started his Red Devon herd in the 1980’s and was instrumental in helping the breed regain its popularity.  Mr. Carlton was definitely caught by surprise when named as the recipient of this award.

The Board of Directors Meeting

Following the conclusion of the general membership meeting the board of directors met to elect officers.  Jeremy Engh garnered the most votes for President, Greg Hickl was selected Vice President and Paul Colucci was reelected as Treasurer.

A Personal Note

It has been an honor to have served as your president this past year.  Obviously this type of job comes with challenges, but I have very much enjoyed the experience.  Thank you for your support, kindness and words of encouragement.
